Position Description

Toptal is looking for a Survey Research Manager to join our Market Insights team. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of independently designing, running, and analyzing consumer- and business-focused survey programs.

This individual will focus on collecting requirements and understanding the open questions business leaders across Toptal have when it comes to clients, freelancers, and other stakeholders. They will design survey programs to address these requirements. Surveys will focus on a mix of businesses, individual employees, and other members of the Toptal freelance marketplace. Our ideal candidate has experience designing surveys, administering them, and analyzing the data itself to generate relevant insights. You should have experience using statistical tools like SPSS, Stata, R, Python, or other tools.

You must possess excellent analytics capabilities as well as outstanding business acumen. This role requires a self-starter attitude, comfort working in fast-paced environments, with rigorous analytical skills and attention to detail. You’ll be focused on using survey data and analytics to uncover strategic insights, and working with the broader Market Insights team to help scale Toptal via those insights.

This is a remote position that can be done from anywhere. Due to the remote nature of this role, we are unable to provide visa sponsorship. Resumes and communication must be submitted in English.


  • Partner with the Marketing leadership team to understand business questions that can be answered through market research, surveys, focus groups, and other methods.
  • Design and administer surveys and other data collection approaches to address strategic questions across Toptal.
  • Author and structure surveys to collect and build relevant data sets.
  • Coordinate third-party survey vendors and agencies in administering surveys, sourcing respondents, and collecting data.
  • Own end-to-end execution of analysis for research requests and projects.
  • Analyze survey response data using a combination of qualitative and quantitative techniques to answer relevant business questions and uncover strategic insights.
  • Present and communicate findings to your colleagues on the Market Insights team and broader Marketing function.
  • Collaborate directly with business stakeholders to understand their needs and then develop plans and projects to address those needs.
  • Facilitate workshops and brainstorm with team members to communicate findings. Convert those findings into projects that have measurable business impact.

In the first week, expect to:

  • Onboard and integrate into Toptal.
  • Become acquainted with the teams, product, and business operations.
  • Familiarize yourself with research projects already conducted.

In the first month, expect to:

  • Dive into the survey data! Understand what data is available and how it has been collected and used in the past.
  • Begin meaningfully contributing to existing research projects by helping with project coordination and analysis tasks.
  • Get familiar with Toptal’s Talent and Client Marketing Strategies, and Content projects and processes.

In the first three months, expect to:

  • Have a well-defined roadmap of survey projects that you are collaborating on.
  • Start establishing yourself as the go-to resource for data collection and survey design.
  • Work with broader stakeholders to structure business problems as analytics exploration of survey and other data.

In the first six months, expect to:

  • Lead your first end-to-end survey design and data collection project.
  • Present or publish results of your surveys via internal channels or stakeholder presentations.
  • Help business units use your survey results to drive meaningful change in their day-to-day operations.

In the first year, expect to:

  • Confirm the business impact of your projects.
  • Work with the broader Market Insights team to launch a periodic survey and data collection initiative to better understand freelancing, talent, and the future of work.


  • 5+ years of relevant primary market research work experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Statistics, Sociology, or a related field. Graduate-level degree preferred.
  • Experience organizing and designing surveys. This includes authoring questionnaires, working with agencies to source participants, and determining size of participant populations.
  • Experience running end-to-end survey projects. This includes requirements gathering, data collection, data cleaning, analysis, and modeling.
  • Extensive project experience, with the ability to show how your analytical work translated to client or business success in prior roles.
  • Comfort analyzing data using R, SQL, Python, or other technologies.
  • Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, Looker).
  • You must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • You must be a world-class individual contributor to thrive at Toptal. You will not be here just to tell other people what to do.

Wojciech Gryc a former entrepreneur and data/AI researcher as Toptal’s VP of Market Insights. Wojciech started his career at IBM Research, and went on to study math and social science of the Internet at Oxford, on a Rhodes Scholarship. More recently, he founded and scaled Canopy Labs, an ML-driven data platform used to personalize customer journeys. The software was used by companies like Expedia, JetBlue, Carnegie Hall, the Whitney Museum, and more. Wojciech is joining Toptal from Phase AI, where he was helping startups launch AI- and ML-driven products and digital transformations. Across Canopy Labs and Phase AI, Wojciech’s revenue and marketing optimization projects covered over 150 companies, 100 million user profiles, and $5B in revenue.
