Project History

Data Modeling for FRTB

Designed the data model for a top Canadian bank to comply with FRTB regulations across multiple jurisdictions, including Canada, the US, the UK, and the EU, without causing significant changes in the existing solution.

Fundamental Review of the Trading Book (FRTB) is a new regulatory framework prescribed by Basel that has a modified version of the rule text in each country. This requirement created a challenge for my client since the bank was present in multiple jurisdictions, and most of its IT infrastructure was located in its home country.

The enhanced data model enabled the bank to comply with all the jurisdictions without causing any major change in the existing solution. It also gave the bank flexibility to comply with any new jurisdiction should it decide to enter into new markets.

Market Data Strategic Solution

Led the business requirements and data model design for the market data system for Global Systemically Important Banks (G-SIBs).

Overhauled market data infrastructure by building a new in-house market data system to:
• Cater to Fundamental Review of the Trading Book (FRTB) regulation for expected shortfall (ES) and non-modellable risk factors (NMRF), backtesting, and P&L attribution calculations, and
• Support BAU processes for VaR and Stressed VaR calculations.

This new system was necessary to replace the legacy technology that could not support the data volumes required for the new regulation. It also leveraged big data technologies, such as Apache Hadoop and Apache Spark, to quickly store and retrieve millions of market data points via a request-response mechanism using REST APIs.

IHC and CCAR Regulatory Reporting

Enabled the client to comply with enhanced prudential standards for Foreign Banking Organization reporting requirements.

Delivered the requirements by conducting sessions involving stakeholders from market risk, front office, technology, and finance, two months before the stipulated timeline.

I collaborated with the client’s finance team to define the process and business controls and provide a data governance framework. This engagement allowed me to generate FR Y-9C, 14M, and 14Q reports, preparing their new entity for its first submission for Federal Reserve’s Dodd-Frank Act Stress Test (DFAST) and Comprehensive Capital Analysis and Review (CCAR), consisting of FR Y-14A/Q and FR Y-9C.
