Project History

Deferred Revenue Recognition in Chargify

Led the research, definition, testing, design, acquisition, development, and delivery of Revenue Recognition in Chargify.

Revenue Recognition in Chargify allows businesses who use Chargify to recognize revenue properly, in accordance with GAAP, FASB, IASB, ASC606, and IFRS15 regulations.

Often businesses collect money one time for services that could be delivered for several months. In those situations that money should be recognized as revenue across those several months. Chargify has a revenue report that automatically recognizes this revenue deferred across the service period.

I recognized the need for revenue recognition from several different sources, considered many options, pulled in development and design to help with the testing and development of these options, and chose to solve this by acquiring ProRata and adding to their feature set. I spoke with all relevant customers, created requirements, developed, iterated, and delivered with the team and saw huge success, high adoption, a decrease in churn, and an increase in sales.

International Direct Debit in Chargify Through GoCardless

Led the research, definition, testing, design, development, and delivery of International Direct Debit in Chargify.

I received many requests from our Chargify customers for help billing their customers using SEPA with Stripe or a number of other payment gateways. They wanted this capability because many of their customers prefer to pay directly from their bank account with direct debit and because it offered lower fees to the business.

In case you're not aware of direct debit, it is the same thing as ACH in the US, but the Automated Clearing House only covers the US. Most of Europe uses SEPA. The UK uses Bacs. Australia uses Becs. Canada uses PADS, etc.

After talking with these customers and researching all available options, we decided that GoCardless would be the right partner to integrate with to add Direct Debit capabilities because they were the only solution that integrated with all needed Direct Debit networks. I spoke with Stripe and other gateways and they indicated that they had no intention of expanding direct debit coverage to cover all needed networks.

I researched this initiative, pitched options, wrote requirements, tested, developed, released, and helped market this feature with the Chargify team as the product lead on this initiative.

NetSuite: Chargify Integration

Led the research, definition, testing, design, development, and delivery of the Chargify: NetSuite Integration.

One of the major features missing from the Chargify feature set, causing prospective customers to choose competitors, was the lack of an out-of-the-box, enterprise-grade Chargify: NetSuite integration. I researched with customers, NetSuite experts, competitor solutions, and third-party consultants to determine the best approach to build a reliable integration simple enough to be universally applicable, but also robust enough to automate the majority of the integration work.

We chose to build an integration centered around first creating sales orders in NetSuite before creating invoices or payments. This allows full use of NetSuite's fulfillment, shipping, inventory management, and revenue recognition capabilities.

After my initial research with UX design and developers on the project, I documented the requirements and stayed closely engaged through development and release. During development, I kept two of our customer support team members in the loop as "customer champions" to help ensure that we were solving for all required customer use cases. I also trained support and created marketing and sales collateral to make the release more effective.
