Blizzard Blink Shopping - Buy Online Pickup In Store

Online ordering decreased wait times at BlizzCon from 1.5 hours to 10-15 minutes; YoY revenue was up by $1.2 million.

BlizzCon is Blizzard's annual convention, with 30k attendees over 2 days. The consumer products team has a large presence at the show, ~$4 million in revenue. In 2016, that volume saturated our ability to quickly service customers, and wait times reached 1.5 hours. For the 2017 event, we knew we needed to dramatically improve that process. We explored a number of different options, everything from delivering direct to hotels, to opening external shops, and finally decided that our best option was to streamline the order and payment step. That was the most time-consuming piece of the process and easiest for us to duplicate with existing systems.

Blink was the result. Named after the teleportation ability of Tracer from Overwatch, the new system enabled BlizzCon attendees to "Blink" through the line, and pick up their order with a QR code.

The new feature was a huge success - lines were significantly faster, even for customers who didn't use Blink. Revenue was up as well - more customers were able to purchase quickly and effectively. Finally, it was a big win for the show as a whole - many customers reported that they felt like they had more time to enjoy the convention.
