Project History

Hiperwall Productization

http://www.hiperwall.com

Built a global multimillion-dollar business from an academic research project without any outside capital.

A research team at the University of California at Irvine developed a type of software that enables anyone to mount a set of computer monitors next to each other and have them behave as if they are one massive, very high-resolution display.

I licensed the technology from the university and formed a company to take it to market. The research team had used the technology to display extremely high-resolution images that were great for academia but of limited value in the commercial world.

In response, I conducted market research to determine that the technology could be used to combine multiple live feeds into the display matrix to meet the emerging needs of the control room market. I worked with engineering to identify any needed functions to fulfill these requirements and added them to the product roadmap. I also determined the best way to communicate the advantages of our approach to the market. Ultimately, I grew the company into a multimillion-dollar business with customers in 60 countries without the need for external funding. Today, I sit on the company's board and provide oversight.

Corporate Turnaround

Returned a company that was losing money on declining revenue to profitability and positive growth.

I was initially asked to provide consulting services to a manufacturing company that was losing money and market share.

I determined that significant restructuring was required and oversaw the implementation of that restructuring. This work included appointing a co-CEO to work with the founder, who no longer wanted to manage day-to-day operations. I also changed the distribution strategy, rebuilt the sales team, and updated the product line to meet new requirements. Finally, I introduced a new product line to meet the emerging need for customized products.

Based on the positive results of my work, the company appointed me to the board of directors. In that position, I continued to oversee these strategic changes as the company transitioned from an operating loss to profitability while increasing revenue and market share.

New Product Development

Conceived, designed, and developed a revolutionary multimedia multipoint conferencing system.

In 1997, I was commissioned to develop a business based on one of the first high-resolution rear-projection display systems available anywhere.

I conceived of the world's first multipoint multimedia conferencing system that integrated video conferencing, whiteboarding, application sharing, and document sharing among users in multiple locations. Then I developed functional specifications for the product, identified partners from whom to source all needed components, and negotiated and executed all necessary agreements. I also oversaw the development of hand-built prototypes which we demonstrated to focus groups in three cities.

Based on these positive results, I convinced the company's worldwide product planning group to set up a factory and begin production of the product.
