The most amazing...

...software product I've designed was the data warehouse that provided global box office grosses for the Hollywood Reporter and all major Hollywood studios.

  • Senior Cloud Architect

    2018 - PRESENT
    • Led an Agile team consisting of cloud data architects and data scientists.
    • Designed large system migrations to the cloud, lift-and-shift, or greenfield development in MS Azure.
    • Consulted on the enterprise architectures for Fortune 500 companies making a corporate-scale move to MS Azure technologies.
    • Designed multiple successful self-service BI implementations.
    • Implemented data governance strategies which accelerated the path to advance analytics.
Technologies: MS Azure, Data Factory, SQL, Azure ML, Data Lake, Blob Storage, Logic Apps, SSIS
  • Vice President of Data and Analytics

    2017 - 2018
    Neptune Flood Insurance
    • Designed and developed a database for a public eCommerce site for purchasing insurance policies at a startup company; used Azure SQL Server, SSIS, .NET, and Azure PaaS.
    • Built and designed a data warehouse for sales and risk analytics; used Azure SQL Server and SSIS.
    • Created a business intelligence platform for analyzing sales and risks; it was built with Power BI and SQL. The risk analysis was dependent on geospatial analytics with geocodes, topographical, elevation, statistical modeling of multiple characteristics, and LIDAR data; so I also implemented SQL geospatial types and features.
    • Constructed a sales forecast tool using R language libraries, SQL Server, and Power BI. This tool was used daily to manage decisions around aggregation and exposure to financial risk.
    • Developed dashboards and insights for A/B testing analytics on the company's public website. As an exciting startup, this web site is unique in that it sells flood insurance directly to consumers which is presently not common. Used Google Analytics, SQL, and Power BI.
Technologies: MS Azure, SQL, MongoDB, C#, Power BI, Watson Analytics, PostgreSQL
  • Manager of Business Intelligence

    2012 - 2017
    Bankers Financial Corporation
    • Acted as the lead architect for One-click Homeowners, an award-winning predictive analytics tool that used SQL Server and R libraries to predict the best risks for investors. This system outperformed human underwriters in profitability.
    • Replaced multiple legacy reporting systems with a cloud-based Azure SQL enterprise data warehouse and Power BI. This system had a high adoption rate and increased the self-service BI usage by 1900%, retired thousands of legacy reports, and became the primary trusted source in the company for financial data. The warehouse also ingested all of the Salesforce data, resulting in marketing team preferring our reporting platform to the Salesforce reports for more flexible and powerful self-service analytics.
    • Worked, as a senior analytics resource, with the leadership to guide sales and marketing strategy through data-driven insights with SQL and Power BI.
    • Created data-driven market segmentation insights that allowed for measurable revenue gains and cost-savings.
    • Constructed operational BI dashboards with Power BI, Cognos, and Tableau for daily management of business processes for product management.
    • Implemented regular data influencer checks with Watson Analytics and R statistical risk models for validating risk management data strategies.
Technologies: MS Azure, SQL Server, Power BI, Watson Analytics, DB2, Tableau, Cognos
  • BI Platform Leader

    2011 - 2012
    Princeton Information Systems
    • Developed a SQL data warehouse and Tableau front-end for internal operations using SAP data.

Technologies: SQL, Vertica, Tableau, Azure, Microstrategy
  • Enterprise Data and BI Architect

    2006 - 2011
    • Architected a system on SQL Server that records and reports box office grosses from 50,000 theatres globally. This is the main system used by Hollywood studios to get box office data.
    • Worked as a data architect on the Nielsen TV Ratings' system; designed many custom reporting tools using SQL Server and C#.
    • Acted as a BI architect on a Nielsen project in partnership with Facebook. This project combined data from the Nielsen TV data set with the Facebook data set.
    • Worked as a member of a corporate data governance team.
    • Acted as a SQL and BI architect on a system that helped companies like Procter & Gamble decide whether to bring new products to market.
    • Used predictive tools such as SPSS to model data from focus groups and surveys.
Technologies: SQL, Informatica, Cognos, MicroStrategy, C#, Netezza, SSAS, Sybase IQ
  • Consultant | Trainer | Mentor

    2003 - 2006
    • Helped measurably increase profitability for Publix Bakery's data warehouse.
    • Mentored the Nielsen TV Ratings' team during a custom app development project with SQL, C#, and ASP.NET.
    • Taught, as a Microsoft Certified Trainer, SQL, OLAP, BizTalk, .NET, distributed apps, COM/COM+, and software-as-a-service.

  • CIO Magazine | Top 100 Award for Data Analytics (Other amazing things)

I acted as the team lead and architect for One-Click Homeowners insurance with Bankers Financial Corp. which was included in the CIO Magazine Top 100. This link shows the winners list for that year.

  • Celent Analytics Award (Other amazing things)

On this project, I acted as the team lead and architect for the Bankers One-click Homeowners predictive analytics app. It received an international award from Celent for Analytics in 2014. This link points to the winners list where our product is listed.

  • Nielsen Online Campaign Ratings (Development)

For this project, Nielsen and Facebook partnered to combine Nielsen's deep repository of demographic and market habits data with Facebook's user data to provide advertisers with enhanced marketing insights.

This tool was used by major brands such as Coke and Procter & Gamble and followed a similar model to Google Ads in how it tracked user web habits.

  • Nielsen Film Cube (Development)

As a senior data architect with Nielsen, I was fortunate to design from scratch a new system, replacing a legacy system, to report film box office grosses. This system, called Film Cube, supplied film sales data for Nielsen's Hollywood Reporter magazine as well as all Hollywood studios.

When the film Avatar was released, we had a high-priority request from Fox Studios to redesign the platform to allow the breakout of 3D viewing statistics, leading to changes to the system that allowed any Hollywood Studio to view, for the first time, 3D grosses vs. regular screen grosses, across 50,000 theatres, domestic and international.

  • Box Office Estimator (Other amazing things)

Whenever the TV or news report on how many millions of dollars a major film is expected to make over the weekend, there is a good chance the data you are seeing came from the Nielsen Box Office Estimator. This predictive tool was built using Nielsen Film Cube as a data repository and reporting platform.

  • Bankers Financial Enterprise Data Warehouse (Development)

As the architect, my role was to create a brand-new data, BI, and analytics platform across multiple verticals including insurance, surety, and finance for $500 million dollar company.

I replaced multiple legacy AS/400 systems, thousands of reports, and increased self-service BI adoption across the company by 1900%!

The senior management began to treat data in the warehouse as the de-facto-trusted standard, resulting in it being used to produce corporate income statements and financial reports. It also led to multiple revenue and savings opportunities by becoming a single unified data platform used for strategic initiatives across all business units.
