Experience

Medico-legal Case Management System

Working with the Victorian Institute Of Forensic Medicine for many years, I worked as a developer enhancing and improving their enterprise-level system.

When the opportunity presented to work as the solution architect to bring the system into a more future-ready state, I relished the challenge. My task was to improve it, so I took the approach of documenting the business requirements and provided all the possible solutions that could be considered:
• Do nothing.
• Refactor the existing system.
• Remodel the existing system, including microservices and reusable components.
• Rebuild the entire system.
• Integrate the system into another platform.
• Recreate the system on another platform.
• Use COTS software.

There were many options, whether it was best to use the internal development team already in place or to consider other alternatives. The options were documented considering cost, effort, and time and presented to multiple stakeholders. We also investigated options for government funding, as it was a government organization.

I was heavily involved in the bid documentation for funding through a government modernization program, and the replacement system was put out for tender.
