The most amazing...
...thing I've built is the onboarding system for Gmail. It has been great to see my work translated into 71 languages and viewed by every new Gmail user.
  • Principal Web Developer
    2009 - PRESENT
    • Built products for a wide range of clients, from Google to single-founder startups. See below for product details.
    Technologies: Python, JavaScript, HTML/CSS
  • Gmail Onboarding (Development)

I was the lead developer for the current (2014) onboarding system for Gmail. Relying heavily on Closure and CSS animations, this JavaScript application has been translated into 71 languages and is used by every new Gmail user.

  • Core Metabolics (Development)

An iOS, web, and Apple Watch mobile app for changing the way people lose weight through diet and exercise. Using proprietary algorithms and integration with fitness trackers, we predicted metabolism specifics and tailored activity and diet to optimize fat loss.

  • Tekuma (Development)

Tekuma is an iOS app for quickly matching people with art they will love, and delivering it to them seamlessly. I worked with the non-technical co-founders to create the mobile app, back-end, and product details.

  • Google Apps FAQ (Development)

I was the lead developer for the new (2015) FAQ page for Google Apps. I designed a scalable content management system for Google content editors with an Angular front-end.

  • Google Apps Show (Development)

I was the lead developer in building an Angular application to showcase The Apps Show, a Google media production highlighting all the features of Google Apps. Like the other Google projects in my portfolio, my Angular code adheres to Google best practices for AngularJS, and is extensively reviewed by multiple Google engineers for clarity, security, performance, and style.

  • God of War: Ascension (Development)

I worked with a team of other senior Django developers to build a scalable Django platform on AWS for a PlayStation 3 game. I focused primarily on the beta and DLC distribution system and on how they integrated into a social gaming experience we built. Our infrastructure and application handled millions of active users and tens of millions of key distributions in the months leading up to the game's release.

  • Google Wallet (Development)

I was the lead developer for the 2013 and 2014 releases of the Google Wallet website. Using a proprietary Google NoSQL and editing platform, I architected an elegant way for content editors to maintain all content on this fully responsive site.

  • Google City Experts (Development)

I was the lead developer for the 2014 releases of the Google City Experts website.

  • Google Vote Planner (Development)

I worked with Google and the Sunlight Foundation to bring transparency to the 2012 election. Using the Sunlight API and the newly released Google Civic API, we built a JavaScript application to show election choices as well as endorsements and affiliations to voters. A rich JavaScript application was backed by a Python back-end on the Google Cloud Platform.

  • Google Education (Development)

I was the lead developer for a suite of websites for Google Education, including separate sites for tablets, apps, and Chromebooks.

  • bareMinerals Video app (Development)

I was the lead developer for a JavaScript application showcasing the expansive video collection of bareMinerals makeup. I architected a custom Node.js CMS to manage videos, products, and their associations. The Node.js backed API is intelligently designed to sustain a high number of simultaneous users with minimal server resources.

  • US Navy Stories of Service (Development)

I was the lead developer for a JavaScript application to showcase biographies of various US Navy personnel. This web app is fully responsive and leverages the power of Backbone, jQuery, and CSS animations to maintain an extremely clean codebase. Pending release.

  • Toyota Corolla Collaborator (Development)

I worked on a product to customize a 3D Toyota Corolla with WebGL in a Google Hangout with friends. The 3D car model is configurable with dozens of options, exterior and interior views, and a 2D fallback. Firebase adds real time collaboration of all these options, and the rendered car can be taken on a "test drive" via a Google Maps API backed hyperlapse feature between any two points.

  • Dinner Dynamo (Development)

I built the minimum viable product for a non-technical startup founder, taking them from a Word document of ideas to their first paying customer. I created a custom markup language to describe, parse, scale, and combine recipes and their amounts. This Django site relies on CoffeeScript, LESS, and Bootstrap to maintain a clean front-end codebase, and the Django/Python back-end heavily leverages Celery and Redis for the recommendation engine.

  • Whap (Development)

I worked with non-technical cofounders to take a product from mockups to success launch. Whap is a geosocial network with a custom popularity algorithm to address popularity of events and venues at this moment. This Django site uses Foursquare and other APIs heavily, and smart offline task processing keeps the recommendations current and the site responsive.

  • Befrenemy (Development)

I built the beta version of a social network for a non-technical founder. Given high level vision and mockups, I took the idea to reality with user management, profiles, "likes" and "dislikes," activity streams, albums, video sharing, tagging, real time collaborative drawing boards, and impressive search capabilities via Apache Solr.

  • Building for America's Bravest (Development)

I was the lead developer for a WordPress fundraising site for a non-profit organization that builds houses for wounded veterans. A heavily customized integration into the payment API encourages future donations.

  • 3 Day Startup (Development)

I built the WordPress multisite platform that supports over 60 sub sites, and created custom plugins to manage event details for each. As well as volunteering for this project, I served as a software mentor to this organization for aspiring college entrepreneurs.

  • High School Startup mentor (Other amazing things)

I was a software mentor for aspiring high school innovators.

  • Famigo (Development)

Famigo provides a directory of child- and family-friendly applications for mobile devices, as well as a parental control app for the Android operating system. I worked on the front-end of the web product, and used Optimizely extensively to optimize the user experience.
