Experience

Smart Innovative Operations

Participated in the Smart Innovative Operations (SIO) project to enable remote control and monitoring of one of Air Liquide's sites in Europe. This helped optimize energy consumption, improve reliability, and reduce operational costs by eliminating the need for night-shift and weekend operators.

Deir Ali II | Combined Cycle Power Plant

A €650 million+ project (circa 2008–2011) to add 700 MW to the existing gas-fired plant south of Damascus. It is a combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant. The power plant runs on dual fuel, primarily natural gas. I was the only automation engineer on-site, working and collaborating remotely with involved vendors and suppliers who couldn't be present on-site back then due to the unrest.

I contributed to the planning, execution, and completion of commissioning activities for the second gas turbine and steam turbine systems. I conducted cold and hot commissioning for the balance-of-plant systems, including the HRSG systems, diverter damper, and steam bypass system. I also oversaw electrical and controls commissioning for the selected control systems, including the ABB DCS, SCADA power generation portal software, and Siemens S7-400H PLCs.

Finally, I initiated ABB Symphony Plus DCS for both hardware (Harmony control units, communication/agent modules, and BRC400 controllers) and the troubleshooting software, in remote coordination with the ABB team in Italy.

A €5+ million European Union-funded initiative designed to enhance the resilience and adaptability of the manufacturing sector in response to global crises. I was a work pack lead and developed a flexible 48-hour industrial response capability through process automation and robotics. The selected use case was the assembly of the main part of the continuous positive airway pressure device used in response to COVID-19 pandemic. I used two KUKA robots and a Siemens S7-1500 PLC to achieve the project's objective.

A £14.3 million DRAMA project aims to provide strategic advice to aerospace suppliers on adopting additive manufacturing technology in their process chains.

I facilitated the DRAMA team in benchmarking middleware technologies that enable connectivity among multiple additive manufacturing machines, metrology equipment, and post-processing machinery with high-level systems.
