He has flown solo and with instructors in multi-hour thermal flights over alpine and flatland environments. He is familiar with small-airport operations, air traffic control communications, and aviation regulations governing aircraft operations and maintenance.
Agtech Sensor and Camera Systems in Remote Kenya
I owned, designed, and built 4G-connected sensor and camera systems deployed in rural Kenya. The on-the-ground team consisted of Kenyan engineers working with a Kenyan ML team to deliver remote observability and inference capabilities for predicting crop yields, health, and market viability in the flower industry.
The systems achieved an expected 5-year lifetime on a single battery charge while handling extreme networking conditions, including multi-second round trips and multi-day internet outages, extreme weather, including monsoon rains, local detection of camera sensor failures, stringent telemetry requirements, local detection of suitable weather conditions for photography, and time synchronization across hundreds of disparate physical devices. Physical access to devices required multi-day trips by local engineers and was generally not possible.
Photo quality requirements were assessed and set by the model team, and achieving the desired consistency at inference time required careful calibration of on-device imaging techniques. Specific sensor failure modes were accounted for, custom network protocols were designed, and early-boot troubleshooting via power-consumption side-channel analysis was achieved.
