Matjaž is a back-end and platform engineer with 14 years of experience building distributed systems in multiple languages. He has worked on high-throughput betting systems, cloud-managed Wi-Fi at large scale, and more recently fintech, identity and KYC. In his latest role he focused on platform engineering and developer experience: the API standard four engineering teams build against, and the gateway that enforces it. Earlier, he was a tech lead and a team lead.

Work Experience
Principal Engineer
USBC
- API platform lead across four engineering teams. Digital identity company that pivoted to regulated payments in mid-2025; I moved with it, from credentials engineering into platform architecture.
- Main developer on the company's OpenAPI standard, the rules every API follows across four teams. Built the CI gate enforcing it: 30+ custom lint rules and an AI reviewer on each pull request.
- Built the TypeScript pipeline merging nine microservice OpenAPI specs into two API products, handling shared components, naming collisions, audience filtering and Kong publishing. Now the standard across both engineering orgs.
- Made gateway authentication default-on: a global OpenID Connect plugin validates JWTs on every route in every environment, with declarative per-route exemptions replacing hand-maintained config.
- Led extraction of the identity domain from a legacy monolith into five deployable services, and moved the platform to a new OIDC provider across seven services, retiring three legacy ones.
- Built the KYC service verifying users via Veriff (documents, liveness), Plaid (bank identity) and Twilio (phone). Owned provider clients, webhooks and session lifecycle; each tier unlocks higher transaction limits.
- Owned the PostgreSQL layer across identity services: schema design, migrations and an immutable audit trail of who changed what. Moved read-heavy endpoints from offset to keyset pagination.
- On-call for the whole backend, handling incidents with Datadog traces, APM and logs. Mentored engineers, reviewed designs and interviewed candidates.
- Before the payments pivot, built the verifiable-credentials platform: OpenID4VC issuance and verification, SD-JWT credentials, presentation validation, and DID and key management APIs.
Senior Software Engineer
Plume Design
- Main developer on power management, cutting access-point power draw to about a third by powering down radios when usage allowed. Designed the constraints that kept it from affecting users.
- Delivered multi-stage and scheduled firmware upgrades for the device fleet: prerequisite version matrices, intermediate versus final targets, post-reboot state transitions, and retries when a device fails mid-upgrade.
- Shipped secondary IoT network support end to end across four services, from configuration and capability gating through to node publication and DHCP relay routing.
- Extended the shared IEEE 802.11 library for 320 MHz channels and client capabilities, then migrated the channel-width model across three services and the protobuf contracts without breaking compatibility.
- On-call for the services I owned. Onboarded faster than any engineer in company feedback, with a first commit inside a week and a first feature inside a month, in Scala, which was new to me.
Tech Lead
Paurus
- Tech lead for sports betting exchange. Owned architecture decisions, mentored the team and led the migration from Java 8 to Java 17.
- Built the Matchbook integration and the casino wallet transfer and bonus flows, and delivered cashout liability-gain calculation with the settlement, cancellation and rollback paths.
- Increased throughput tenfold, from 20 to 200 bets per second, while keeping coupon matching between users correct under concurrent distributed transactions across Hazelcast and Oracle.
- Opened the exchange to third parties with an external REST and RabbitMQ push API for reading offers, placing bets and receiving real-time updates.
- Built AMS, the agent management system, end to end: Keycloak agent hierarchy and roles, KYC document verification and audit, credits, commissions and rebates, position taking by sport, and P&L reporting.
Senior Software Engineer
Sportradar
- Joined as one of the first three Ljubljana developers on the project. Worked on a trading services project which grew from one million bets per month to 20 million per day.
- Researched and developed a solution for a snooker ball tracking project using computer vision.
- Started as first QA engineer on the .NET integration SDK, wrote over 1,000 unit and system tests, then took over its development and client support.
- Kept the back end and front end in harmony. Assisted in expanding the developer team from three to over 30 people.
- Developed a JUnit framework-based live system testing framework, which was used by the QA team to seamlessly write end-to-end tests as if they were unit tests.
- Supported the on-call techical support team, which monitored and kept high system uptime and performance. Planned required changes to handle the load increases.
Project History
USBC Identity and Payments Platform
https://usbc.xyzI built the identity verification users go through during onboarding. It connects to outside providers for document and liveness checks, bank identity and phone verification, and each level a user reaches unlocks higher transaction limits. I also built a simulated verification flow, so testing no longer depended on the outside provider.
I set the company's API standard and built the automated check that enforces it on every code change, with help from an AI reviewer. The APIs of nine services are combined into two products, one for partners and one for the company's own apps.
I made the gateway check identity on every request by default and moved the platform onto a new sign-in provider. I let partner companies manage identities for their own users, rebuilt webhook notifications so they are delivered in order, and set rate limits per client instead of per IP address.
Before the move to payments, I built much of the company's digital credentials platform.
Plume Cloud Wi-Fi Controller
http://www.plume.comI was the main developer on the power saving mode, which cut access-point power draw to about a third of normal by powering down radios when usage allowed. It switched on when real-time device activity showed a network was idle, or on a schedule. I designed the limits that kept it from affecting users: it only ran at night, and not on networks with too many devices or
access points.
I also switched the optimisation service from stored snapshots to live data from the controller, so decisions used the current state of each network, and enriched mobile network scans from the access points with country and operator.
On the controller I built remote deletion of a device's saved configuration and automatic cleanup of disconnected devices. I also worked on radio transmission power, support for the UNII-4 band, feature support per device model and app prioritisation rules.
Betex Sports Betting Exchange
I raised the exchange's throughput tenfold, from 20 to 200 bets per second. The hard part was keeping bets correctly matched between users while many were placed at the same time, and I also fixed race conditions in how a matching bet was picked.
I moved the exchange's running totals onto real-time stream processing, and built jobs that track matched amounts and risk per sport and tournament. I wrote the tools we used to load-test bet submission, and added shared monitoring so operations across the exchange reported their success and timing.
As tech lead I owned architecture decisions, mentored the team and led the upgrade to a current Java version. I also built suggestions for linking events and markets from another exchange to our own.
Sportradar Managed Trading Services (MTS)
https://sportradar.com/betting-gaming/sportsbook/trading-risk/managed-trading-services/Over that time MTS grew from 1 million bets a month to 20 million a day and became one of the company's top-grossing products. I worked on how bets came in, were checked and stored, and on the rules bookmakers configure, from limits to reduced stake offers, cancellation and cashout.
I moved the configuration store behind the trading rules to a new database, with servers picking up changes as they happen. I built the migration of bets to a new store, with a cross-check that none were missing, and changed bet exports to stream instead of loading everything into memory. I also added per-client access control, an audit log of configuration changes, and an
end-to-end test framework covering the main betting scenarios.
