The most amazing...
...solution I've developed is an automated observability stack that uses predictable load balancer profiles, increasing operations insights.
Work Experience
Principal Site Reliability Engineer
Upstart
- Automated golden signals alerting for all services based on historical trend analysis.
- Founded a postmortem bar raisers guild to perform incident response retrospectives and enforce accountability for corrective actions.
- Enhanced change documentation by standardizing markdown architectural decision records and conventional commits.
- Developed software to generate operations reports for high-profile user journeys, used to focus engineering efforts to reduce service latencies.
- Merged compliance and engineering incident management pipelines into a single tracking platform.
Staff Site Reliability Engineer
- Spearheaded a resource management initiative that delivered $200+ million in five-year CapEx savings.
- Drove a hardware homogenization project that avoided system procurement during a 15% data growth period.
- Integrated SRE tooling into Twitter's caching product, a new service written in Rust that replaced vintage C and C++ codebases.
Engineering Manager
- Managed two teams of site reliability engineers supporting storage and caching software development teams.
- Directed the Python 3 migration ahead of v2 EOL, using the opportunity to move 300MB of legacy code into Twitter’s monorepo, reducing deployment complexity and increasing unit test coverage.
- Achieved 85% at-rest and 100% in-transit encryption adoption, with 50% mTLS coverage.
- Drafted promotion documents with all engineers and presented cases for two promotions, with one engineer earning a ladder rung change from senior to staff.
Staff Site Reliability Engineer
Box
- Designed a distributed firewall for Linux hosts, Kubernetes, OpenStack, and network gear, based on a centralized policy database.
- Standardized edge proxies on NGINX from a mix of Apache Traffic Server and HAProxy.
- Developed a traffic monitoring service used to validate network access controls.
Engineering Manager
DreamWorks Animation
- Built a team from zero to eight engineers responsible for the construction of a cloud-based live 3D rendering SaaS platform.
- Containerized legacy film animation software for deployment across multiple cloud environments, including HPE Helion, Rackspace Managed Private Cloud, AWS, and GCP.
- Ratified incident management procedures based on requirements from and agreements with external customers and internal stakeholders.
Principal Engineer
DreamWorks Animation
- Developed TCL for F5 Networks BIG-IP application delivery controllers to replace Apache mod_proxy and Oracle Service Bus proxies from render farm service chains.
- Architected Go and Python programs to synchronize load balancer configuration with software deployments, including the automated construction of observability dashboards.
- Assembled proof of concept rendering environments with manycore processors and GPGPU, for evaluation by animation software developers.
Engineering Manager
DreamWorks Animation
- Relocated to India for one year to oversee the initial build and expansion of a data center with 25,000 computers.
- Conceived a cross-studio proxy architecture adopted globally.
- Hired network, systems, and tooling engineers for a new film animation studio. Promoted one engineer and relocated two engineers from India to the US.
Senior Network Engineer
DreamWorks Animation
- Developed a Python program to automate OpenVPN and BGP configurations across 6,000 Linux listeners.
- Implemented TRILL within a datacenter to provide switching resiliency and scalability without the Spanning Tree Protocol (STP).
- Migrated the primary routing protocol from OSPF to BGP and the SPT from RSTP to MSTP.
- Developed a process and software solution for storing network configurations in a version control system.
Engineering Manager
MobiTV
- Scaled the systems and networking teams from three to 20 people and established a global network operations center within the expanded organization.
- Scaled platforms supporting Sprint TV and IPTV launches through 40x channel and 7x client growth.
- Migrated operations from Rackspace to distributed colocation and secured content ingestion with IPsec.
System Architect
First Victoria National Bank
- Established Ethernet-based IP and IPX networking standards for systems and telecom.
- Developed custom applications and decommissioned legacy Unix systems, saving $400,000+ annually.
- Implemented Tarantella and telecom enhancements to optimize remote application access.
Software Engineering Manager
Information Alliance
- Assembled a team of three to five systems engineers and programmers to offer businesses Internet connectivity and web-based application development.
- Designed and worked as a key contributor to First Page, a Unix-based document processing system for distributed companies.
- Drafted a business plan to launch an in-house Internet service provider, enabling the company to extend Internet connectivity and email services to several local businesses.
Software Developer
Information Alliance
- Contributed to Unix-based software for the Criminal Law Attorney Support System (CLASS) used by district attorneys across 25 Texas counties.
- Wrote an inventory management system for a large saddle maker after a multi-company acquisition, as similar manufacturing components appeared in different warehouses under distinct SKUs.
- Automated the distribution of natural gas processing quality reports by transferring data from VAX/VMS and Unix systems to a fax server.

OnDataSuite
https://www.ondatasuite.com/Managed Tiered Proxy System
I served as the directly responsible individual on the entire ecosystem, creating a unidirectional proxy infrastructure. This replaced several stages of Apache and Oracle Service Bus proxies, with load balancer virtual services between clients and servers. My design replaced a dated version of Squid with Apache Traffic Server to guarantee HTTP/1.1 processing with downstream systems. The caching layer accessed a single load balancer virtual service per render farm. The TCL programming on that virtual service manipulated HTTP requests and forwarded them to healthy service endpoints. This resulted in approximately $26 million in savings for the first animated film to use the system.
