Freelancing as an iOS Developer

iOS (formerly iPhone OS) is a mobile operating system created and developed by Apple in 2007 exclusively for Apple hardware devices, including the iPhone. It is the second most popular mobile operating system globally after Android, with over 2 million iOS applications in the Apple App Store. The iOS user interface (UI) is based on multi-touch gestures and components like sliders, switches, and buttons. iOS also features internal accelerometers to respond to shaking the device or rotating it in three dimensions, and the operating system is also full of accessibility functions that enable users with vision and hearing disabilities to properly use Apple products. Major versions of iOS are released annually. iOS developers are responsible for developing applications for mobile devices powered by Apple’s iOS operating system and are proficient in one of the two programming languages for the platform: Objective-C or Swift. iOS apps can also be written in Ruby, Python, C#/.NET, Lua, Pascal, or using abstraction libraries for writing iOS apps with web technologies.

Freelance iOS developers can earn a salary of up to $91,000 per year, or an hourly rate of up to $100. As the hiring for freelance iOS developer jobs becomes more competitive, iOS developers are likely to see their iOS contractor rates go up, however this calculator will dynamically reflect current salary data. Other inputs that adjust a freelance iOS developer’s hourly rate include remote vs. on-site location, years of experience, and whether the requested client engagement is full-time or part-time.

How the Calculator Works

Toptal is the largest network of high-skilled freelancers in the world. We created this tool using our database of nearly ten thousand vetted freelancers. Data is updated daily, and excludes hourly rates that fall 2 standard deviations above or below the mean in order to remove outliers.

The Freelance Calculator lets you see how much you can earn as a freelancer, including what your hourly rate would need to be to match your current or desired salary based on the number of hours you work per week.
