‣ To create a showcase product that will show clients how fully cloud-based analytics can operate.
Details:
‣ Using "dummy" data created for a fully operational small retail business, we created sample analytics and visualizations that mimicked the actual products a small business would require.
‣ Multiple roles exist in this sample, in order to show, even within a small business, that focused data has real value and different roles must have significantly different interests so the entire company succeeds.
Lessons learned:
‣ Utilizing "dummy" data sometimes leads to complications people do not comprehend when working on real projects. This dataset has been continuously upgraded during the dashboard development to make the "dummy" data more "real." The outcome gives much more interesting details, however still cannot be analyzed via statistical tools as the data distribution is highly influenced by randomizing functions, which is not the case of real-world datasets.
Showcase Project — Data Modeling and ETL

‣ To create a "dummy" dataset on which realistic looking Power BI dashboards can be designed on.
Details:
‣ A full analytics implementation was used with best practice tools and was tailored for cost-effective performance (SQL database, AAS, Power BI embedded).
‣ Row-level security is implemented via AAS to ensure proper data access from the reporting layer.
‣ Although Tabular Editor is not an official Microsoft tool, it has been promoted by Microsoft Power BI as a preferred external tool to edit data models easily. It is also much easier and simpler to use rather than the official SSDT through Visual Studio.
Lessons learned:
‣ Using AAS for DAX modelling is more beneficial for smaller clients rather than using Power BI because when it comes to performance, scaling an AAS server offers much more cost-effective options than Power BI Premium. It also gives better control over the data models, when work is shared within a team.
