The most amazing...

...thing I did was migrate an AML system that was using UAT and production servers to an SQL 2014 DWH comprising over two billion rows and 5TB of incoming feed.

Work Experience

Senior BI Developer

2014 - 2020
Lloyds Banking Group (Consultant)
  • Developed, tuned, and optimized complex stored procedures, functions, triggers, constraints, and indexes using T-SQL, SQL Query Analyzer, execution plans, SQL Profiler, and parallelism and partitioning techniques.
  • Developed SSIS packages, SSRS reports, and SSAS cubes for data warehouse (DWH), SUMMIT, and AML feeds, using Teradata, Oracle, and SQL 2008 and 2014 with Jira to monitor, track, and prioritize work items for clearer visibility.
  • Produced cube analyses and management information (MI) reporting using Power BI, Tableau, and Excel.
  • Developed client reports from databases and cubes using SQL and MDX queries.
  • Monitored and supported daily batch runs, ensuring deliverables were available within required service level agreements.
Technologies: SharePoint, Microsoft Power BI, Jira, SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), T-SQL (Transact-SQL), SSRS Reports

IT Application Support Analyst

2014 - 2014
Wyevale Garden Center (Consultant)
  • Delivered tangible results against a background of rapid business change.
  • Identified, investigated, and resolved functionality and data integrity issues in existing applications.
  • Used the organization's help desk system to manage issues and update the support knowledge base.
Technologies: SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), VBScript, Classic ASP, Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, HTML, Visual Studio, SSRS Reports

Senior BI Developer

2013 - 2014
OpenLink Financial (Consultant)
  • Supported a business intelligence platform designed to serve the advanced risk management reporting needs of companies that trade commodities and capital markets.
  • Created, tuned, and optimized complex stored procedures, functions, triggers, constraints, and indexes to handle exchange derivatives, using T-SQL, Query Analyzer, execution plans, and SQL Profiler.
  • Developed, optimized, and supported the EMIR Cube, which helped firms across all sectors meet European market infrastructure regulation requirements.
  • Built and optimized SSIS packages and SSRS reports to meet EMIR reporting requirements for derivative contracts and implementation of risk management standards. This established common rules for central counterparties and trade repositories.
  • Installed and supported EMIR Cube components and resolved issues at national and international client sites.
Technologies: FogBugz, C#, MDX, SSAS, SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), T-SQL (Transact-SQL), SSRS Reports

Senior SQL Developer

2011 - 2013
Barclays Investment Bank (Consultant)
  • Developed, optimized, and supported SQL Server databases in the credit risk engine space for credit, market, and counterparty risk trading teams. The work focused mainly around the firm's strategic credit risk system for derivative trades.
  • Created SQL stored procedures and SSIS packages for Basel 3 rules and downstream reporting systems and dashboards.
  • Maintained and supported QlikView 10 dashboards across the department.
  • Developed, tuned, and optimized complex stored procedures, functions, triggers, constraints, and indexes using T-SQL, Query Analyzer, execution plans, and SQL Profiler.
Technologies: SharePoint, IBM Rational ClearCase, QlikView, Autosys, Jira, SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), T-SQL (Transact-SQL), SSRS Reports

Applications Development and Support

2007 - 2011
Lloyds Banking Group
  • Developed and supported a P&L and risk system within finance IT. The system accepted feeds from several upstream systems, processed the records by means of an overnight batch, and fed data and reports to downstream systems.
  • Built and supported a product and market DWH serving the middle/back office in the form of MI systems, financial reporting and accounting for treasury operations, finance workflows, SUMMIT, Flexi, and Atlas (a settlement system for FX and MM deals).
  • Developed a system using SQL Server 2000, Visual C++ 6.0, VB6, SQL Server 2005/8, C# .NET, VB, and MVC 2.0.
  • Monitored WebSphere to ensure file and message delivery using Connect:Direct.
  • Provided overnight support to batch runs for the P&L and risk system and the products and markets DWH.
Technologies: Tivoli Framework (ITM5), SharePoint, Visual SourceSafe, Jira, MVC Design, C#.NET, .NET, C#, SQL Server 2005, Visual Basic, Microsoft Visual C++, SSRS Reports

Optimization of a Data Warehouse

I optimized a DWH that was slow running, didn't contain any error handling or logging, didn't have a robust ETL, and didn't process the customer analytics cube successfully. I added error handling into the SSIS packages, created monitoring and reporting of the batch, optimized the SQL procedures and code, and fixed the bugs in the cube. These improvements reduced the batch run time from 8 hours to 4 hours.

Migration of a Legacy Application

I assisted in the migration of a mainframe application to a Windows-based application designed to improve accuracy and efficiency. A two-tier application, consisting of VB6 screens for the interfaces and MS Access for the core processing, was designed to accept information via media input, process it, and produce the monthly client statements.

My role included:
• Investigating and documenting client requirements by means of functional and technical specifications.
• Object-oriented analysis and design (taking measures to record and resolve technical issues).
• Coding, testing, and implementing application code using VB and MS Access.
• Producing and maintaining documentation for all phases of the project.
• Providing post-implementation support to the client.

Migration of an AML Application to SQL 2008

I was the lead developer on the migration of an AML application from SQL 2005 to SQL 2008. The application comprised multiple components that extracted data or linked to a number of different sources. Some of these sources were test databases as opposed to production databases. The sources all had to be aligned to production and tested for accuracy before migration was performed.

Created an ASP.NET MVC Application to Monitor an Overnight Batch

The overnight batch for a P&L data warehouse was failing to complete within the required SLAs, and it wasn't providing an estimated completion time. I built an ASP.Net MVC application that monitored the queue of P&L entries to be processed. It enabled the overnight support team to see how many records had been processed, how many were processing, and how many were waiting to be processed, along with estimated completion times.
