With downtime estimated to cost $40,000 per hour in lost subscriptions, the single incident represented an estimated $1.92 million in lost revenue.

Solution: Rather than repair the existing control plane, Toptal rebuilt Calm’s infrastructure on an AWS-managed Amazon EKS cluster in just three days. A Toptal senior DevOps engineer automated the networking layer with Terraform, introduced IAM authorization, and moved cluster configurations into source control to improve stability and reduce the risk of future outages.

Outcome: The rebuilt infrastructure stabilized production and reduced Calm’s exposure to costly downtime. Over the following six months, the platform performed consistently, and Calm was able to absorb significant revenue growth without performance issues.
