Project History
  • ClassNK-NAPA GREEN Monitoring Based on NAPA BUS
As Technical Leader, I facilitated the collaboration of 12 development teams on the adoption of a common communication tool.

As Technical Leader of the team working on the Real Time Monitoring application, I had to collaborate with several other development teams who would provide the sensors data for the application. Doing that, I noticed that each team had a different technical solution to provide or receive data from other teams, leading to a "spaghetti" architecture. I initiated the discussions on creating a common communication tool, proposed a technical solution, and made a business case for why this standardized communication would bring even customer benefits, not only reducing development complexity and cost. The project was approved by management. The technical solution was improved by collaborating with the technical leaders of other teams, considering that the applications were using different technologies (Java/C++/.NET). Finally, ActiveMQ was selected to be used as a message broker and the Real Time Monitoring application used that as a communication tool only. The solution is used even today, without major modifications.

  • NAPA Fleet Intelligence
As the Scrum Master of the team, I coached the team to become high performing and rewarded at the company level.

The team has adopted Agile while struggling with low code quality, slow delivery, slow reaction to customer reported bugs, plenty of fatal and urgent customer reported bugs, low collaboration with other teams, lack of focus, almost zero understanding of the user's environment and needs, and lack of strategic decisions. The team has aggressively implemented improvements leading to successful deliveries while greatly increasing the morale of the team. Because the context of the team needed to change also, I supported different team members to take initiatives at company level: Clean Code Academia, strategy clarifications, Agile Testing Community of Practice.

  • NAPA Decision Support
As Technology Manager, supported the fast and reliable delivery of a survivability assessment tool for ships after collision.

Following the Costa Concordia tragedy, the company noticed a huge market opportunity in providing to maritime customers a solution that automatically calculates if and when a ship needs to be evacuated in case of accidents, based on ship sensors and stability models. A team was created, an MVP was agreed by involving users and then a delivery was made in less than a year. My role as a manager of the team practicing servant leadership, was to build the right context for the team: including recruiting team members, solving motivation issues, supporting the team to acquire new skills, creating a team space in the office, challenging the development priorities at company level to provide focus, actively engaging other teams for support.
