Among other products and services, this leading company sells coordinate measuring machines (CMMs). These machines require setup via software that was created over 30 years ago, leaving end users with a less-than-ideal experience. The client chose Toptal to create a more immersive and modern user interface.
Solution
Reimagining the user journey
After a two-week discovery phase, the Toptal team used technologies like Autodesk 3ds Max, Google Material Design, React, and Azure to create a flow that walks users through the setup process step by step. The team also reworked the hierarchy so that advanced controls were no longer displayed on the main screen.
Sprinting toward excellence
To build the new interface efficiently, the Toptal team recommended a cadence of week-long sprints, which would allow them to accomplish a high volume of work quickly. They used the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) to manage their workflow, dividing the project pieces into epics and stories.
Outcome
An immersive experience
The new software creates a digital twin of the CMM that’s being calibrated, with artful use of shadows, gradients, and highlights. A drag-and-drop feature allows users to manipulate individual elements of the machine, and the entire digital twin can be rotated on its axis.
Building on success
The client was so impressed with the Toptal team’s efficiency that it twice extended the contract, allowing the team to build additional interface elements beyond the initial setup experience. The overall project came in ahead of schedule and under budget.
